Electrical switch installation is an essential part of any electric or electronic circuit. Everyone is familiar with switches. In fact they are a very taken-for-granted feature of modern life. Therefore most people might not realize how many types there are, and how many functions they are involved in. Unless you are especially interested, it's not that important to understand switch science. This is because your licensed electrician knows how they work and which ones to apply to your job. It's probably enough for you to appreciate that they make possible a lot of great systems in your home or business.
Switches are small devices which can make or break an electric circuit. They are either 'on' which is called 'closed' because closing a gap in a wire makes the electricity flow. Or they are 'off' which is called 'open' because when there's an open gap in a wire the electricity cannot not flow. Like traffic lights at a road intersection, they control the flow and direction of electricity in a circuit. They are thus controllers in the circuit. You have to be physically present to use mechanical switches. That is because they have to be pressed, released or touched in some way. They come in over a dozen different functional designs, depending on what used they are needed for.
These have no moving parts and are therefore 'solid state'. You do not have to touch them and therefore do not have to be present for them to work. They can be switched on or off by another circuit such as a controller. For uses with a controller see Smart Home Automation.
Electrical switches are faster and more reliable than mechanical switches. Furthermore they maintain the stability of the electrical system that they are part of.
Your electrical switch installation can be standard, as in house or office wiring. Alternately it can be customized in a design to suit a particular purpose. Although non-electricians can install simple switches in basic circuits, say, for a lamp, it is best to employ a qualified electrician.
